Teaching English Language undergraduate students to become teachers of English at the Universidade Federal de Alagoas – UFAL
My talk is about the possibilities I have found to promote English teacher education at an undergraduate level. The theories supporting my views are Critical Applied Linguistics and Critical Literacy which highlight the role of education and the teacher to promote social justice and equality. Therefore, my aim today is to describe three projects I supervise and coordinate at UFAL so as to make  the English Language undergraduate students learn how to teach English by teaching it critically. Each project focuses on different groups of students but having the same general aim: to make the students critically aware citizens by learning English.

The first project has the University workers as students. The second project is part of a broader research project which deals with economically less favoured communities in Maceió city and aims at helping the students become more critically aware citizens. Finally, the third project has UFAL undergraduate students who come from economically less favoured communities too.

All the teachers-students for these three projects are my undergraduate students. We have weekly regular meetings so as to prepare classes and construct knowledge on our ongoing teacher education process.
